“As advocates for the preservation of Art and Culture, the undersigned request that Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the Los Angeles City Council immediately remove the Watts Towers Art Center (WTAC) and the Charles Mingus Youth Art Center (CMYAC) from the city’s list of art facilities that are slated for privatization. The Watts Towers Art Campus provides invaluable art education, cultural programming and open green space to under-served youth and community members as well as providing a cultural destination to the diverse national and international tourists that visit the Simon Rodia Watts Towers. Cultural Tourism is the leading industry in Los Angeles. Attracting over 300,000 visitors annually, the Watts Towers are designated as a U.S. National Historic Landmark, California Historical Landmark and a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. The Watts Towers Cultural Art Park needs to remain in the public domain. Please join us to stop Cultural Genocide by asking Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and the City Council to remove the WTAC and the CMYAC from privatization by signing your name below.”

Here is Episode One of a series of interviews, accompanied by an original score, that I have planned for the month of February. Black History Month began in 1926, and it is important to me, as an artist, to pay tribute to those who came before me, those who braved their way through a much crueler and confusing world just so that I could have the opportunities I’ve cherished in my life.
This first episode is with my father Jerry Mosley, in which he talks about the true origin of the “Natural” hairstyle. I’ve always enjoyed my father’s stories, and I hope you do too.

EPISODE 1:

MM: “Ladies and gentleman welcome to episode one of theStarM black history month tribute. The first story is brought to you by my father Jerry Mosley about the origins of “the Afro”

JM: “Let me mention this to you, naturals didn’t start, and a lot of guys, you’ll hear somebody else tell you this, Naturals did not start from the projects, naturals started from the elite blacks. They didn’t start from the…you didn’t just get up with an ol’ nappy head and didn’t have to comb your head and get no haircut. ‘Dem jokers hair was neat, clean, had the nice trim around here.
The elite started naturals, and then naturals went down from the elite, down to the projects. Then they started wearing them, all them jokers down in the projects saying “I’m gonna get my hair did too!” Then they started sticking a comb in their hair.
But back in the day they had real neat naturals. They started out, and everybody talks about that, Kim [Miles Mosley’s Godfather] used to mention that, the naturals started in high society, the neat part. Even, like, the girls and the guys from Howard University wore naturals.
People started wearing naturals in the streets ‘cus of your boy Stokie Carmichael ‘nem. They were the activists in the college, in the college circuit. Stokie Carmichael ‘nem wore naturals.
and then the Black Panther Party, they wore naturals. Wearin’ natural hairstyles was a movement.

[musical interlude]

JM: That was before Jheri curls. The Natural hair style was a movement because… they started the movement of wearing natural hair because the muslim brothers say “man we can cut your hair.” They had you with them pretty… you had you hair so pretty and neat. You got it combed, you got it cut, you got it shampooed. You went over there and got your hair washed and shampooed just like you was at a regular barber shop. In other words, what I’m saying in conclusion is Natural wasn’t cheap!

But see it worked out to be so convenient because, when they started the Movement with the Martin Luther King movement, it was easier for them to get out there and march ‘cus everybody had naturals. They didn’t have to have no pressing iron. But, that’s what spike lee talks about. The industry went crazy. “Madame Walker had them straightening their hair. They done stopped straightening their hair!?! All over the United States they’ve stopped straightening their hair?!?” They say “Man we got to get them to start straightening their damn hair again.” They lost a lot of money.

Once the preachers wives wore naturals everybody started, then you got your Angela Davis from the Black Panther Party all them, and Sunny Sanchez, Miles Davis, all them started wearing naturals. And your boy from the Modern Jazz Quartet, had the cool little crops around there. So, the whole movement then went natural. James Brown had a natural everybody in james brown’s band had a natural, the Four Tops had a natural all the Temptations had naturals, Smokey Robinson had a natural so, natural got to be the thing.
Blacks made a lot of money. Wasn’t no Japanese wasn’t no Koreans with a beauty supply back then.
For some reason they always made the black products back east, I guess because you have a large portion of blacks back there. Like out here, you don’t have a lot of black beauty supplies out here, like, make-up places. They have black stuff back east like what Shaaron Bloom nem is doing out of Atlanta. Flora Roberts didn’t hardly even make out to California.

But you got down {south}, Go to Alabama, Mississippi, New york, Chicago you got Blacks, you got a big population of Blacks. California don’t have no large population of blacks, they got the little group they got over there in watts, but that’s no large population.

you go down south you see BLACK PEOPLE.

Here is Episode One of a series of interviews, accompanied by an original score, that I have planned for the month of February.
