Young Woman

by theStarM posted May 15th 2009 at 6:11pm

This is a very special song I wrote for Sheridan, a dear friend’s niece.  She was on her way to start the first day of high school. I’m sure we all remember that day vividly. However, times have changed. Since I feel that there are new pressures and confusions out there for our young women who stand on the brink of a life of infinite possibility I wanted to give my level best advice. I don’t know much, but what I do know, I’ve written in this song.

Heavy Equipment Firm

This is an oddity in a way. This song was created very late at night (early in the morning) during the “Intentionally Left Blank” series of song-writing. I had friends over to the house, and *bing* bang* boom* this song was born. My favorite part is the rhythm and syllabic placement of the second verse:

“It’s like a fight in Manila

10 ton gorilla

no sense in running

cuz we can run wit’chya”

Power Lines

Ray Charles once said that he loved country music because of it’s awesome power to tell a story. He tried to emulate that attribute in his soul music (to much success). I have to agree. I think there have been no better story-tellers in American music than those of the traditional country artists. Emmy Lou Harris, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Jim Reeves, Lester Flatt, Dolly Parton (most under-rated guitar player ever), Peggy Lee and so on…All tremendous story tellers.

I think my appreciation for Country music is what bleeds out of me from time to time in a song like this. In no way traditional, and maybe, barely country, it is certainly what is being channeled even if it is not apparent.

If I Could Glow

One of my favorite lyrics from the “Intentionally Left Blank” series of songs. A hypnotic piece of music that allows (requires) the lyric to carry it. I haven’t quite figured out how to perform this live because it is so delicate, but I’ll figure it out soon enough.

You Soldiered On With Me

by theStarM posted May 13th 2009 at 10:39am

This song was written for my Manager and close friend Barbara Sealy on her birthday. Part of the “Intentionally Left Blank” series, this song holds great meaning to me. Though it is short it explains the gratitude I have for a woman without whom, I would have accomplished very little in my career. Having guided me from the age of 14 both behind the scenes and by the hand Barbara is as responsible for me being who I am today as my very own wonderful parents.

Traitor

This is one of those bubbling George Jefferson feeling tunes, I imagine it sounds best when you push your lips and and shake your head in a mildly ambiguous circle. Snapping on beat 4 really feels good too.

Consumed

A song from the “Intentionally Left Blank” project written in May of 2009.  I’d have given this song to The Temptations back in the day.

Fire

A song that will one day be re-recorded with a 40-80 piece orchestra. By “one day” I mean “eventually” and by that I mean “soon.”
